Miss Phyllis Borden Helms, age 90, of Covington, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at the Woodlands Nursing Home, Clifton Forge.
Miss Helms was born March 1, 1928 in Norfolk, a proud Navy brat from birth. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lelia Blanche Terry and father, James Herman Helms as well as her beloved younger brother, Jim Helms, Jr.
Survivors include many varied friends and family members from up Potts Creek and across the country
Phyllis was a graduate of the University of New Mexico with a Master of Science and retired from the University of California. She enjoyed a career on the Pacific and Indian Oceans on several research vessels studying geology. Although, judging from her many stories, she more enjoyed all the people and places she encountered along the way. In retirement, she continued to enjoy traveling, fishing, and a ride on one of her motorcycles but nothing more than having a good laugh.
Miss Helms was a member of the California Rifle and Pistol Association. A member of this community since, April, 2003, she was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Alleghany Highlands Genealogy Association.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Monday, March 26, 2018, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Edith Snedegar officiating. Interment will follow in Lone Star Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be John Mann, Freddie Hepler, Carlos Hepler, Timmy Wright, Eric Wright, and Robert Persinger.
