Obituary for Mary Matthews Booth

Ms. Mary Helen Matthews Booth, age 78, of Covington, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2016, at the Brian Center Rehabilitation and Nursing Care-Alleghany, Low Moor.
Ms. Booth was born December 29, 1937 in Hot Springs, the daughter of Claude Matthews and Carrie Bowers Matthews. She was a lifetime member of this community and a graduate of Covington High School, Class of 1957. She played basketball in high school and was known by the nickname, “Lucy”. After graduating, she became a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her life revolved around her family and her love for sports, especially golf. In her later life, she worked for many years at Ritsch’s Cleaners, where she made many wonderful friends.
Ms. Booth is survived by a daughter, Beverly B. Southall and her husband, Steve; two sons, Michael Booth and Clifford Booth, Jr. (Turtle); three grandchildren, Kristina S. Smith and her husband, Mark, Trever Booth and his girlfriend Sidney Birchfield, and Joshua O’Conner; three great grandsons, Xavier, Aaron and Riley; and a sister, Margaret M. Ross and her husband, Lanny. She is also survived by several cousins, nephews, nieces and good friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the father of her children, Clifford Henderson Booth, Sr. in 1992 and a granddaughter, Charity A. Southall, in 1980.
A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Johnson Creek Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Nancy Palmer officiating.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mrs. Booth’s name to charity of your choice.
