Obituary for Robert Horton Smoot

Robert H. Smoot
Mr. Robert Horton Smoot, 90, passed away October 25, 2013.
He was born May 25, 1923 in Shipman, Virginia to George Cleveland Smoot and Ethel Horton Smoot. Known to friends as Bob, and family as Horton, he grew up on a farm with brothers George and Ray, and sister, Virginia. After graduation from Lovingston High School, he joined the Army to fight in WWII. He served bravely and honorably as a combat infantryman with the 180th Infantry 45th Infantry Division in North Africa, Italy, and France. He returned from Europe and, while waiting to start college, worked with his brother George in a paper mill in Covington, Virginia. Unfortunately, he had an accident at the plant in which he lost his right eye. Despite this, he overcame and achieved much in his life, including graduating from Lynchburg College with a B.A. in Business Administration and Economics in 1952, and a Masters of Education degree in School Administration from the University of Virginia in 1958. Bob became a teacher and principal in elementary and high schools in Alleghany and King George counties, Virginia, and later became a sales representative, manager and consultant for two large and successful printing companies.
He was very involved in charitable causes, particularly Lions Club International. His service with the Lions was admirable and much of his spare time was spent recycling eyeglasses and doing other tasks which enabled people of limited means to improve their vision. He served 5 years as President of his club, and was otherwise involved as a leader there in other capacities. He was “Lion of the Year” three times. He also received the Lions highest form of recognition, the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship award.
A widower, his loving wife of 61 years, Josephine Bosserman Smoot, passed away in 2011. Bob had no children, and is survived by his sister, Virginia Smoot Holladay, and his niece and nephew, Marcie Holladay Zebley and Thomas D. Holladay III. He always considered himself to be a Virginian, though he lived in Georgia since 1970. He is sorely missed by friends and family alike.
A memorial service was held at his longtime church in Georgia in November of 2013.
A graveside service will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Covington, where Bob’s ashes will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife Jo at 3:00 pm on May 25, 2014 with Rev. James M. Smith officiating.
Those wishing to attend the service should assemble at Cedar Hill Cemetery by 2:40 P.M.
Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift is suggested. Please gift Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, 425 W. Main Street, Covington, Virginia 24426, and/or Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, 5582 Peachtree Rd, Chamblee, GA 30341.
