Obituary for Wynona Walthall Hawkins "Tiny" Crush

Mrs. Wynona “Tiny” Walthall Hawkins Crush, age 89, of Covington, died Sunday, September 8, 2019, at The Springs Nursing Center, Hot Springs. She was the wife of Robert “Bobby” Edwin Crush.
Mrs. Crush was born August 29, 1930 in Alderson, WV, the daughter of the late Hamilton Ralph Walthall and Ethel Rosebud Smith Walthall. Her family moved to Covington in 1940 but during World War II, her father moved the family to Ivor, VA. for three years as he was an Electrician at the Norfolk Naval Shipyards. They moved back to Covington in 1945. Wynona excelled in choir during high school and she received a Superior Plus in a high school competition. She attended a summer program at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ. During her working career, she had most recently been employed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist by Bath County Community Hospital, Alleghany Regional Hospital as well as Montgomery Regional Hospital. Wynona was a lifelong member of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church where she previously sang soprano in the choir for many years. She also served her church by working as the Clothes Closet Chairman as well as the Circle Chairman. Wynona was honored by the church with a lifetime membership in the Presbyterian Women. She was a member of the Ladies of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Crush was passionate about giving back to her community through her membership in the Alleghany Historical Society where she served as Secretary. Wynona loved painting, plants, flower gardening, cooking and especially baking her rolls. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Crush is survived by a son, James G. Hawkins; two daughters, Deidre H. Massey and Lisa K. Hawkins; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth A. Crush; grandchildren, Melissa Martin Merchant; Danielle and Deena Hawkins; great grandchildren, Elijah Hawkins, K.J. and Kendrick Goggins and Harrison Merchant; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Hawkins; a brother, Ronald Walthall and wife, Camille; and a sister, Iris June Hamm and husband, Ray; a brother-in-law: Mark Crush and wife, Debbie; two sisters-in-law, Linda Crush Ellis and husband, Whitman and Peggy Crush Abell and husband, Clyde; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Crush was preceded in death by a son, Gary W. Hawkins; a brother, Ralph “Sonny” Walthall; and a sister-in-laws, Linda Dew Walthall and Wanda C. Pyle.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Friday, September 13, 2019 at McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jim Moss officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Timmy Walthall, Bruce Walthall, Larry O’Rourke, Gavin Dressler, Bobby Hawkins, Jeri O’Rourke and Paul Linkenhoker. Honorary pallbearer will be Ed Gibson.
The family will receive friends on Friday morning from 11:30 A.M. until time of service at the church.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church Organ Fund or McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church Food Pantry, 900 N. Alleghany Avenue, Covington, VA 24426
