Obituary for Gary Burdette Watts
Mr. Gary Burdette Watts, age 81, of Valley Ridge, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2018, at Carrington Place, Daleville. He was the loving and dedicated husband of Patricia Cobb Watts.
Mr. Watts was born May 20, 1937 in Covington, the son of the late John and Hazel Watts. He was a lifetime member of this community. After graduating from Covington High School, Gary served his country for four years in the Air Force and was a member of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was employed as a tour supervisor for Westvaco in the Pulp Mill before retiring in 1999. Gary was a member of the Edgemont Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon for several years. He loved getting together with family and friends. He particularly enjoyed family reunions and picnics.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Jackie Watts.
In addition to his wife, Gary is survived by his stepson and wife, Darren and Susan of Springfield; four grandchildren, Colonel Brett Forbes and wife, Kristi of Ft. Hood, TX, Lauren Lee and husband, Kevin of Charlotte, NC, Kyle Irvine and wife, Elizabeth of Burke, VA and Dr. Patricia Irvine, MD of Allentown, PA. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Ruth Watts of St. Albans, WV and her children, Mark and Kim.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, December 23, 2018 from the Chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Donnie Bowker officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Erskine Graves, Eddie Nicely, Richard Carter, Bert Seay, James Jennings, Gene Hinton and Charles Bradley. Honorary pallbearers will be Malcom Crawford, John DeLight, Lee Reynolds, Allen Farrar and Ronnie Campbell.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M., one hour prior to service at Loving Funeral Home.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, 2306 S. Church Avenue, Covington, VA 24426.
