Print
Mrs. Norma Jean Dunn Hazelwood, age 71, of Covington, died Friday, November 2, 2018, at the Brian Center Nursing Center-Alleghany, Low Moor. She was the wife of the late Monty Ray Hazelwood.
Mrs. Hazelwood was born January 25, 1947 in Ronceverte, WV, the daughter of the late V.B. “Pete” Dunn and Pauline Bessie Copeland Dunn. A member of this community since 1968, she was a substitute teacher in both the Covington and Alleghany School Systems. Norma was the author of two published children books. She and Monty were very proud of having a great influence on her neighbor’s children, Tyler, Travis and Trever Fridley.
Mrs. Hazelwood was a very active and faithful member of Temple Baptist Church where she was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Norma also served the church as Director of Vacation Bible School and on various other committees as her health allowed.
Most of all, Norma truly loved spending time with her grandson, Andy, who was the apple of her eye.
Mrs. Hazelwood is survived by a son, Kevin Hazelwood and wife, Lisa of Covington; a daughter, Kathy Hazelwood Clark of Covington; a grandson, John Andrew “Andy” Clark; a sister, Dreama Dunn Thompson and husband, Harrel; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friends, Brian Hirt, Pam Hirt and Phyllis Deacon.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 6, 2018, at Temple Baptist Church with Rev. William Hartsfield officiating. Interment will follow in Swope Cemetery in Rock Camp, WV.
Pallbearers will be Andy Clark, Harrel Thompson, Brian Hirt, Jack Ratliff, Larry Mann, Rob Fridley, Charlie Barton, Wade Arrington, and Larry Deacon. Alternate pallbearers will be Tyler Fridley, Travis Fridley, Trever Fridley, Edward Arrington, Bryan Thompson, Terry Clark, Raymond Thacker, T.E. "Curley" Smith and Kenny McClung. Honorary pallbearers will be friends, members of Temple Baptist Church and neighbors in Jackson Heights.
The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 7:00 P.M. until 8:30 P.M. at Loving Funeral Home.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Temple Baptist Church, 300 Stratton Street, Covington, VA 24426.
