Obituary for Nancy Clara Hubbard (Meeks)

Nancy Clara Hubbard (Meeks)
Mrs. Nancy Clara Meeks Hubbard passed away on September 14, 2018, after a wonderful life. In her 89 years on this earth, Nancy experienced the joys of life, the love of family and friends, and the grace of God.
Mrs. Hubbard was born on January 24, 1929, in Schuyler, Virginia, a daughter of the late Thomas Edwin Meeks, Sr., and Cassie Lelia Londeree Meeks. She was a resident of Covington, Virginia from 1929 until 2011. She was married to the late Robert C. Hubbard, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1993.
In 2011, she moved to a retirement community, The Crossings at Bon Air, where she made many new friends and enjoyed playing bingo and singing in the chorus. In addition, the move put her geographically closer to her children and grandchildren. She loved her children but adored her grandchildren and relished the opportunity to cheer them on at soccer, football, and basketball games; cheering events, band concerts, dance performances, and baptisms.
Nancy was a graduate of Covington High School, Class of 1946, and attended Campbell College, now Campbell University, in Buies Creek, North Carolina where she also served as a cheerleader. She later attended Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky.
In her professional career, she was employed by Westvaco, now WestRock, as an executive secretary for eight years, but became a stay-at-home Mom upon the birth of her children.
Mrs. Hubbard’s life was dedicated to her family, her church, and her community. She had been a member of Covington Baptist Church since 1937 and sang in the adult choir for over sixty-five years. She was director of the Adult Sunday School Department for a number of years as well as serving on the Pastor Selection committee, the Administrative Board, taught Sunday school for the junior, intermediate, and young adult departments, worked with the Vacation Bible School, and served on the Nominating Committee, the Memorial Committee, and the Building Committee. She also served as chairperson of the first pictorial directory commissioned by Covington Baptist Church.
Her community activities included chairing the women’s division of the Greater Alleghany United Fund, President of Xi Rho Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, President of the Mountain River Garden Club, Board of Directors of the Allegheny Community Theater, and a member of the Alleghany Community Services Board. She was an avid bridge player and if you promise to keep a secret, she followed the lead of her older brothers in that she enjoyed playing poker, too. She was even named a ‘Daily Poker Champion’ on one of her trips to Las Vegas.
Mrs. Hubbard is survived by two children: her daughter, Carolyn H. Sowder and husband Todd; and her son, Robert C. (Clint) Hubbard, Jr. and wife Amy. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Madison Sowder, Jacob Sowder, Bobby Hubbard, and John Hubbard, all of Richmond, Virginia. Also surviving Mrs. Hubbard are nine nieces and nephews who were all dear to her including Mrs. George (Shelby Jean) Manspeaker, A.T. Meeks, Jr., Charles (Bucky) Meeks, Mrs. Joe (Susan) Hammond, Willard Meeks, Jr., Mrs. Teresa Meeks-Teal, and Ms. Janet Meeks. Also, Mrs. Richard (Belinda) Kerns and Mrs. Sam (Tammy) Ballou who live in Covington, have been very close to Mrs. Hubbard. She is also survived by her very dear friend, Dr. Beulah Roblete.
Mrs. Hubbard was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Jack (Winnie) Hicks, and five brothers: Alvin T. Meeks, Sr., Thomas E. (Herb) Meeks, Jr., Francis L. Meeks, Macon W. Meeks, and Willard H. Meeks. As the hymn says, “When we all get to Heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be”; we imagine a joyous reunion when her beloved Bob, her parents and her siblings welcomed her inside the Pearly Gates.
A celebration of her life will be conducted at Covington Baptist Church at 1 PM on Thursday, September 20, 2018 with Rev. Glen Lithicum officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 11:30 AM prior to the service.
Active pallbearers will be her grandsons: Bobby Hubbard, and John Hubbard; her nephews, A.T. Meeks, Jr., Bucky Meeks, and Willard Meeks; and Bill Withrow and Keith Simmons. Honorary pallbearers will be Jacob Sowder, Rick Kerns, Bob Bennett, Dr. Mamerto Adrales, Dr. Krishna Sankar and Bob Wilson.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Covington Baptist Church, P.O. Box 687, Covington, VA 24426 or American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454 Alexandria VA 22312.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Crossings at Bon Air and especially the caregivers in Harmony Square for their loving care of Nancy over the last 9 months.
Mrs. Hubbard will be remembered as a devoted Christian (Baptist), a loving mother and Nana, a Southern lady with class and dignity, and someone who was always very forthright in offering her honest opinion – whether you wanted to hear it or not.
