Obituary for David Crockett Minter

David Crockett  Minter
Mr. David Crockett Minter, age 89, of Covington, died Saturday, September 16, 2017, at his residence. He was the husband of Sandra Dodd Minter.
Mr. Minter was born September 23, 1927, in Logan, WV, the son of the late Charles S. Minter and Nan D. Minter. He graduated from Covington High School and received his undergraduate degree from Randolph Macon College. David served his country as a member of the United States Navy for two tours of duty.
Following his service in the military, Mr. Minter went to work for Travelers Insurance Company in Richmond. After working there for four years, he moved to Covington and went to work as an Independent Insurance Agent for Kinzer Insurance Agency. David retired as owner of Kinzer Insurance after forty-one years in business, serving the insurance needs of the Alleghany Highlands. Mr. Minter was a member of the Independent Insurance Agents Association and a director of the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia.
He was a Rotarian for fifty years, serving as a president of that organization and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary. David was on the board of Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation, serving twice as its president. Mr. Minter was also a founding Director of the State Bank of the Alleghenies.
David was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, elder, treasurer, trustee, superintendent of Sunday school and he sang in the choir for over fifty years.
His hobbies included gardening, cooking, singing and traveling. He loved skiing, hunting and was an avid fisherman. For the last nine years, his favorite pastime was spending time with his granddaughter, Meredith.
In addition to his wife, Sandra Dodd Minter, Mr. Minter is survived by his two children, Gail M. Nicely and husband, Brandon and Steven M. Minter and wife, Trina; his granddaughter, Meredith O. Minter; his two nieces, Meredith M. Hinkle and Suzy Hansen; and his three nephews, Michael Minter, Charles Minter and David D. Minter. He is also survived by twelve great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Charles and Nan Minter, Mr. Minter was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann M. Minter and two brothers, Charles S. Minter, Jr., and wife, Mary M. Minter and William D. Minter and wife, Ella S. Minter.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, September 25, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jim Slate officiating, assisted by Rev. Mike Minter and Rev. Jamie Lloyd. Interment will take place at Cedar Hill Cemetery, followed by a reception at the church.
Pallbearers include Gary Rice, Glenn Bailey, James Howard, Perry Campbell, Kenny Duncan, Kenny Wolfe, Mike Middleton and Pat Harrison.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Caperton, Jim Snyder, G. C. Fawley, Burdette Rupert, B.R. Rupert, Joe Wilson, Carl Reyns, Bill Wilson and members of the Casteel Hunt Club.
The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 12:15 P.M. until 1:30 P.M. at the church.
The family suggests that memorial contributions take the form of donations to the First Presbyterian Church, 185 N. Maple Avenue, Covington, VA 24426, the Alleghany Highlands Arts Council, P.O. Box 261, Covington, VA 24426, or the Kazim Temple Transportation Fund, 628 W. Campbell Avenue, Roanoke, VA 24016.
