Obituary for Guy Fitzhugh "Kayo" Johnson

Guy Fitzhugh "Kayo" Johnson
On December 19, Guy F. “Kayo” Johnson, dearest friend and beloved husband for fifty eight years of Jean Smith Johnson, passed peacefully from this life.
A devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Kayo was loved and respected by his children, Denise (Gary) Pillow, Deborah (John) Garrison; grandchildren, Shad (Alma) Walton, Jonathan (Alison) Pillow, Nicholas (Chezley) Pillow, Evan (Amie) Burkholder, Katelin (Collins) Christy, Hannah Pillow, Leah Pillow, Daniel Pillow; and great-grandchildren, Jorge, Lucas, Lucy, Eva, Caleb, Susannah, Elyza, Nora and Cain; a brother, Robert B. Johnson of Washington, D.C. and a sister, Elizabeth Bourland of Madison, Alabama.
Kayo was born to Fitzhugh Payne Johnson and Mary Caroline (Polly) Tritle Matheny on February 21, 1935. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a great grandson, Zachary Walton. Growing up on the family farm, Kayo developed a strong work ethic and an appreciation for adventure. He attended Augusta Military Academy and graduated from Covington High School. Kayo then served four years in the United States Air Force before he married Jean and returned to the family dairy farm. He was one of the first four people to go through Westvaco’s millwright training program before working as a millwright for them and later became a general contractor, retiring as co-owner of Byer, Harmon and Johnson. Kayo was a founding member and director of Highlands Community Bank. Through the years, he actively served on additional boards and committees.
Being with family was first and foremost in importance to Kayo. Camping, sailing on Smith Mountain Lake and the Chesapeake Bay and traveling the country with Jean in their RV brought great pleasure. Working with the local Men of Mission, Kayo enjoyed serving and fellowshipping with others in the community. An active member of First Presbyterian Church, he served as deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher, along with “in house contractor.”
Declining health in recent years provided new opportunities for service and he developed his own telephone ministry, calling to check on the well-being of others. Kayo led a full and generous life, centered on his love of God and family, for whom he was a humble role model.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the compassionate nurses who provided excellent care at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany and through Mountain Regional Hospice and to Dr. Michelle Ballou for years of expert care, insight and wisdom.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 23, 2015, at First Presbyterian Church in Covington with Rev. Gary Marshall and Rev. Lisa Marshall officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service at First Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Kayo’s memory to the Falling Spring Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 880, Covington, VA 24426, Mountain Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA, 24422 or Men of Mission, C/O Chet Fornwalt, 221 Sherry May Street, Covington, VA 24426.
