Obituary for Harold Burton Parker

Harold Burton Parker, age 85, of Hot Springs, died Sunday, November 4, 2018, at Bath Community Hospital, Hot Springs. He is the husband of Gay Nell Arrington Parker.
Mr. Parker was born September 1, 1933 in Alleghany County, the son of the late Orion Everett Parker, Sr. and Lola Mae Armentrout Parker. In addition to his parents, Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his brother, Orion Everett “O.E.” Parker, Jr. in 2018; his sister, Francis Parker Rupert in 1991; and his beloved niece, Susan Parker Potter in 2013.
Burton served his country as a member of the United States Army stationed with the 9th Corps Headquarters in Sendai, Japan, and attended adjutant general school. Following his return from the military, Burton was employed in the Color Lab Department by Hercules, Inc. Some of Mr. Parker’s fondest memories were working at the former O.E. Parker Lumberyard with his father, grandfather and brother. He also worked for Moore’s Lumber Company and Valentino’s Restaurant located on Monroe Avenue in Covington.
Burton was an devoted member of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served his church as a deacon, an elder and worked with the COPE Food Pantry Program. He was a member of the Tom Gooch Bible Class and served as an Assistant Sunday School Superintendent. Under the direction of his sister, Francis, he enthusiastically embraced the role of Jesus in the church’s reproduction of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper every Easter. Burton was a founding member of the Alleghany County Farm Bureau, former member of the Izaak Walton League of America and member of the Triple Springs Hunt Club. Mr. Parker also served on the Alleghany County Planning Commission. Most of all, Burton loved his farm and sitting on his porch enjoying nature. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards with his family.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Parker is survived by his daughter, Molly Gay Parker of Hot Springs; a sister-in-law, Patsy Parker of Daleville; two brothers-in-law, Burdette Rupert of Covington and James Lewis Arrington and wife, Judy of Tampa, FL. His nieces and nephews, include Rebecca Parker Hudson and husband, Kevin; Anna Sue Weade; B.R. Rupert, Allen Weade, and Bobby Weade. He had three great nieces and nephews, Kaitlyn Lacy Potter, Parker Ruth Hudson and Carter Hobbs Hudson. He is also survived by his first cousin, Howard Liptrap. Burton Loved his precious dogs, Louis, Phil-ibuster, Ladybug, Briar Rose, Hobie, and horses, Doc and Laddie.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 10, 2018, at McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church with Rev. Michael C. Fleenor officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Howard Poague, Billy Potter, Kevin Hudson, Howard Liptrap, Jr., Augustus Hayslett, Craig Poague, Tommy Tranakos, Matt Quantz , Larry Washburn, and David Carter. Alternate pallbearers will be Kevin Scott Young, LeAnn Poague, and Mike Young. Honorary pallbearers will be B.R. Rupert, Wendell Hammond, Jesse Carter, Joe Martin, James English, George Persinger, Joe Wimer, Marshall Fox, and other members of the Triple Springs Hunt Club; along with members of the church’s COPE program.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Loving Funeral Home.
