Obituary for Jean Markham Whiteside

Mrs. Jean Markham Whiteside, age 88, of Covington, died Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany. She was the wife of the late Edward C. “Buck” Whiteside to whom she was married for fifty-seven years. They owned Edgemont Service Station, Whitey’s Miniature and Par 3 Golf Courses, Whitey’s Snack Bar, Restaurant and One-Stop Market.
Mrs. Whiteside was born on June 27, 1928, the daughter of the late Ira Markham and Bessie Markham. She was an educator with Alleghany County Schools and taught at Central High School, Central Elementary, and Callaghan Elementary.
Mrs. Whiteside is survived by her daughter, Robin Whiteside Sams, her son-in-law, Steve Sams, and her three cats, Clay, Doll Baby and Cracker Jack. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Rice; nieces and nephews, Tom and Kay Whiteside, Sharon Whiteside, Wanda Walton, Talmadge and Teresa Bratton, Jim and Sandra Whiteside, Keven and Cindy Rice, Amy Dew, Paul and Susan Rice; great nieces and nephews, cousins, students and many friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 28, 2016, at Cedar Hill Cemetery with Rev. Mike Warren, minister at Calvary Christian Church, officiating.
