Condolences

Condolence From: Debbie Caldwell Kennedy
Condolence: I was heartbroken to learn of Steve's passing. We had shared a two hour phone call awhile ago and were making plans to look through old scrap books in December. He was a long time friend and connection to me and my brother.

I am deeply saddened and I extend my sincerest sympathies to all Steve's family and friends.

Condolence From: James Burr
Condolence: Oh Dear Steve, I just learned of your passing yesterday from Susan. Bill was kind enough to call her with the news. I remember when your family moved next door to us in 1954-55. I enjoyed so much taking You and Bill to Lake Sherwood and hiking in Dolly Ann Drive. Playing ball in the field in front of our homes and just hanging out and passing time in the summer and sleigh riding in winter and church at Granbery Memorial Methodist. I know as a child that I introduced you to weight lifting and you had an immediate interest. I tried to answer all your questions about training and nutrition as best as I could with my limited knowledge as I was learning new stuff everyday. Steve, I remember our last meeting at Lake Moomaw and wish it could have been longer to talk about the old days.

Condolence From: Sally Jones Shrader
Condolence: I am Stephen's first cousin - I grew up with his family and always looked forward to seeing my older cousins (Stephen and Bill). They always played with me and teased me excessively - which I really enjoyed. I had just written a letter to Stephen for his nurses to read to him, I'm not sure it made it there in time, but I just wanted him to know we were thinking about him and praying that he would come back. He was a very special person and will be very much missed by our family.

Condolence From: Harry Savage
Condolence: Since 1970 it has been my privilege and joy to have intersected and been
a friend of and to Steve. We were team mates in Olympic Weightlifting, which
brought him to Newport News and LPWC,as well as the Shipyard, which provided him the means to pursue his passion. Steve was a gentle and soft spoken person, and once I had the privilege of winning his confidence, our lives began a long journey of threading together. Years of diligent training 4 days a week, after long work days, for hours upon end, learning what motivated and inspired each of us to push past physical and mental barriers, we transitioned into a bond that many people are not able to achieve, much less share. He watched our children come into this world, and was there as they grew. He was Uncle Steve, and still is. There is not enough space here to share our bond, and the many many things we shared in many aspects of life, from working on his Jeep, he at the shop for months on end when I built my Corvette..attended Church with me, ate at my Moms home afterwards, and became part of the Savage family throughout. Birthdays, family gatherings, Thanksgivings,Christmas and significant birthday milestones.
We have him captured in family photos and videos. Sitting on the couch with our Golden Retriever that loved him whether he was ready or not. Back in 1975
when we moved into our new home, he moved into my first apartment I ever lived in. We shared motel rooms when out of town during Weightlifting Meets, and burned in memories no one can take away. We discussed every aspect of life and compared notes..and we both benefited from those exchanges.
Throw in the third person in this triangle of friendship, Gary Gillette, we spent years upon years bonded together. Hot Dog King was the epicenter where we solved many of the worlds problems between Dogs and Burgers.
There is so much more that I can share, and if anyone has pictures of Steve I would be more than happy to put together a tribute video. Might even put the "Brother Where art thou?" soundtrack to it. Steve was a champion for the Native American tribute and cause. He loved Forestry and answered all my questions about trees when the moment arose.
Helped him with his Jeep many times, and we shared many a laugh about simple things in life in which we found mutual humor..I am indeed a very fortunate person to be able to call Steve W Jones my friend and 'buddy'. He continues to live in my heart and deeply in my memories. I rest assured he is with the Lord and hope to be able to reunite with him when that time comes. I am sad at the loss, there is no doubt there, but knowing him as I have, the benefits of that bond far exceed the pain of the loss.
Steve, I 'reckon' you now know how much I loved you...thank you for that opportunity. Harry
