Mr. Charles Herbert "Charlie" Zimmerman, Jr., age 75, of Covington, died Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany, Low Moor. He was the husband of the late Brenda Taylor Zimmerman.
Mr. Zimmerman was born March 25, 1939 in Millboro, the son of the late Charles Herbert Zimmerman, Sr. and Margaret Duncan Zimmerman. He was a graduate of Clifton Forge High School, Class of 1957. Charlie served his country as a member of the United States Navy from 1959 until 1963. Mr. Zimmerman was employed as a pipefitter by Westvaco for thirty-nine years. He was a Boy Scout Leader, and coached both Little League Baseball and Little League Football. Charlie helped build the concession stand, dugouts and press box at Nettleton Park and hosted Covington Lumberjack players in his home. An avid sports fan, he loved to watch the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Nationals, the University of Virginia Cavaliers, and Alleghany High School Baseball. He enjoyed hunting and fishing but most of all, he loved to spend time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Zimmerman is survived by one son, Chuck Zimmerman, III and wife, Carol of Covington; one daughter, Lisa Zimmerman Holt and husband, William of Covington; five grandchildren, Charles “Chuckie” Zimmerman, IV, Noah Michael Zimmerman, Steven Douglas Holt, Taylor Brooke Holt, and Madison Paige Holt; one step grandson, Aaron B. Boswell; one sister, Beverly Southers and husband, Ross of Chesterfield; and a number of nieces and nephews including DiDi Goodman.
Mr. Zimmerman was preceded in death by one grandson, Andrew William Holt; two infant daughters including Jennifer Zimmerman; and a sister, Shirley Driscoll.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 16, 2014, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Linda Kagarise officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Kessinger, Tommy Jackson, Josh Jordan, Steven Holt, Chuckie Zimmerman, Travis Anderson, Greg Driscoll and Kevin McSwain.
Honorary pallbearers will be Phillip “Jug” Redman, Floyd Lane, Jimmy Skeens, and Bobby Goodman.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 P.M. until 8:30 P.M. at Loving Funeral Home.
